In a significant move aimed at bolstering Kenya’s healthcare system, Dr. Ouma Oluga has been appointed as the Permanent Secretary for the State Department of Medical Services. Dr. Oluga brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the Director of Health Services at the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).
During his tenure at NMS, Dr. Oluga spearheaded numerous initiatives that transformed Nairobi’s health sector. Notably, he oversaw the construction, equipping, staffing, and operation of 32 hospitals in Nairobi’s informal settlements, serving approximately 3.1 million residents who previously lacked adequate access to healthcare services.
His leadership also led to the employment of over 2,000 healthcare workers, including 200 doctors and 800 nurses, significantly boosting health service delivery within the county. Additionally, Dr. Oluga was instrumental in establishing an Emergency Operation Centre equipped with a toll-free line and advanced life support ambulances, enhancing emergency response capabilities in Nairobi.
Dr. Oluga’s appointment is expected to bring innovative leadership to the national level, with stakeholders anticipating continued improvements in Kenya’s healthcare services.
