Dr. James Nyikal, the Member of Parliament for Seme, has been elected unopposed as the new Chairman of the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Health. Dr. Nyikal, a seasoned healthcare professional and former Director of Medical Services, succeeds Endebess MP Robert Pukose, who remains a committee member.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has lauded Dr. Nyikal’s appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to spearhead reforms aimed at strengthening Kenya’s healthcare system. KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah highlighted Dr. Nyikal’s extensive experience in healthcare leadership and public policy, emphasizing his deep understanding of the challenges faced by healthcare workers and the sector at large.

Under Dr. Nyikal’s leadership, the committee is expected to focus on critical issues such as health financing, healthcare worker welfare, and the advancement of universal health coverage (UHC). The KMPDU has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with Dr. Nyikal and the committee to advocate for improved working conditions for healthcare professionals, enhanced healthcare infrastructure, and policies that ensure quality and accessible healthcare for all Kenyans.

Dr. Nyikal’s election comes at a time when the parliamentary committee has been actively involved in assessing and supporting reforms within key health institutions. Notably, the committee recently approved the Kenya Medical Research Institute’s (KEMRI) reform process, underscoring its commitment to bolstering research and development in the health sector.

Stakeholders anticipate that Dr. Nyikal’s leadership will bring renewed vigor to the committee’s efforts in addressing the pressing challenges within Kenya’s healthcare system and implementing reforms that will benefit both healthcare providers and the general public.
